Want a walkie talkie? HeyTell offers a nice fix, transforming your phone instantly to a ready to go fully functional walkie talkie. Sometimes you might send a text to a friend saying “Thanks,” but perhaps what you really meant was “You weren’t helpful at all, idiot.” No you can say thanks in that awesome sarcastic tone, and no one will ever be confused again. Thanks HeyTell.

Opening HeyTell gives you three different views, conversations, profile, and extras. Conversations is where you’ll be spending the bulk of your attention. Before you start messaging people you’ll need to first make sure your friends have the app installed, then you both need to add each other. After that 10 second exercise you can send your message by holding down the loud orange “HOLD AND SPEAK” button. It is a simple and easy to use process, making this app all the much better.

For those afraid that random strangers will start messaging you, Heytell provides three different privacy settings that have worked for our liking thus far. Under the next tab, you’ll be able to purchase extras, such as voice changer, emoticons, message wipe, and group broadcast. The extras seem fun and nice, but you won’t really need them to enjoy this app.

One gripe we found was that friends overseas couldn’t receive our messages, vice versa. Perhaps it works for others, though it didn’t work for us. But hey, this app is free and 99% of the people I talk to are in the same country, so no biggie.

Bottom line – this app is a must have if you want an alternative to texting. It isn’t the most glamorous app, nor does it offer a million capabilities, but it gets the job done effortless free of charge.
